RABIES ALERT: LOW COST VACCINATION CLINICS

Pueblo, May 19, 2010 – Low cost rabies vaccine clinics will be held Saturday, May 22 from 10:00am to 3:00pm in Pueblo and Fremont counties in response to the increase of animal rabies cases in Colorado.

To date, 42 animals have been confirmed with rabies in Colorado, of which 38 are skunks. Rabies cases this year have been in the following counties: Adams, Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert, El Paso, Morgan, Phillips, Otero and Prowers.

Pueblo City-County Health Department and Pueblo Animal Services are concerned about the increase in positive rabies cases in animals, in Colorado. Primarily, the cases have been in wildlife yet there have been cases in domestic animals and the concern of officials is that rabies could spread more to domestic animals.

Contact with wildlife should be avoided. For questions regarding ill wildlife or wildlife displaying unusual behavior contact Pueblo Animal Services at 544-3005 or Pueblo City-County Health Department at 583-4323. Outside Pueblo County contact your local Health Department.

Rabies can be preventable with a vaccine. Vaccination is not only the law; vaccination can save a pet’s life.

Pueblo Animal Services along with Peak View Animal Hospital will be holding low cost rabies vaccination clinics this Saturday, May 22nd from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in both Pueblo and Fremont counties. Cash only, other canine and feline vaccinations are also available.
